From our official press release last week:

CAPP COMPANY FORMALLY LAUNCHES TWO DANCE RADIO STATIONS

iDanceRadio.fm and iDanceTechno.fm go live on Apple iTunes® Radio

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – June 3, 2009 – CAPP Company, parent of dance record label CAPP Records, announced today the official launch of its two new Internet-based radio stations, iDanceRadio.fm and iDanceTechno.fm, coinciding with their inclusion in the Apple iTunes® Radio listings, included with every copy of the iTunes software.

Both radio stations have been available to the public for several months following a late-2008 “soft launch.” Since this soft launch, station staff have been carefully tweaking both the stations’ technology, as well as the music programming found on each.

iDanceRadio.fm is targeted to mainstream dance music lovers, and with the tagline, “Today’s Best Dance, Today’s Best Variety,” provides an array of dance music that is unique in its breadth and depth. With a cohesive blend of filter house, mainstream remixes, progressive house, electro, and even commercial and crossover techno and trance represented, iDanceRadio.fm is well-situated to be an Internet dance radio powerhouse. In addition to its 24/7 blend of dance music, non-stop DJ mixshows are featured Wednesday through Sunday—many of them unique to iDanceRadio.fm—from some of the world’s best DJs.

iDanceTechno.fm is targeted toward the vastly underserved North American fan base for techno, including hands-up, hardstyle and jumpstyle. While techno music is a huge seller in the U.S. and Canada on Apple iTunes Music Store, there is little domestic support for the genre among record labels and radio stations. CAPP Records serves this market with many of its releases, and now, through iDanceTechno.fm, provides a strong radio foundation to these predominantly young and fiercely enthusiastic fans.

The stations are actively promoting alternative listening approaches as well. “Internet radio no longer means being tied to your PC,” explains iDanceRadio.fm program director Wesley Bryant-King. “You can listen to both our stations using your Apple iPhone or BlackBerry, and take your dance radio with you practically anywhere you go. Our bandwidth-friendly but great-sounding secondary streams make it easy and reliable.”

Alongside the formal launch of stations, CAPP Company is initiating an extensive marketing campaign to promote them both. Dom Toulon, CAPP Company CEO and iDanceTechno.fm program director, explains, “We’re really getting the word out about these stations with an online advertising campaign, and a unique marketing program with iTunes.”

The web site of iDanceRadio.fm is available today at www.idanceradio.fm, and includes a weekly music chart, mobile listening instructions, and more. iDanceTechno.fm fans will gain a full web site this summer; until then, they can still tune-in at www.idancetechno.fm.

While both stations are sponsored by CAPP Records, within their respective genres, they play without bias the great music of any artists or record labels, worldwide. Both stations operate in full legal compliance, and pay applicable licensing and performance royalties to SoundExchange, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC.

Rikah to perform live in Seattle

Our own Rikah, songstress behind Out of Time, Got 2 B Real and Everything is Changing will be performing live this Friday in Seattle, at the C89.5 Listener Appreciation Party.

C89.5 is one of the few terrestrial dance radio stations remaining in the United States, and is listener-supported. We work hard to support them, and Rikah has frequently appeared by telephone during C89.5 pledge drives. This is the first time she’s been invited to perform live for the station, and we’re very pleased to be sending her to do so.

Our own DJ Brian Howe, who performs nationally and who has been heard on XM Satellite Radio, our own iDanceRadio.fm, and many others, is accompanying Rikah for the performance and making sure she sounds as awesome on-stage as we know she does on CDs and in parking lots everywhere.  ;-)   (To explain, she did an impromptu rendition of Ave Maria in the parking lot of a CAPP Records staff event last year.)

If you are in Seattle, can be or will be this Friday, please consider supporting C89.5 by making a donation and attending the party. More information is on their web site at http://c895worldwide.com.

iDanceRadio.fm web site launched

Late last week, we launched the brand new web site of the new Internet dance radio station we sponsor, iDanceRadio.fm. We love how the site looks (it was designed by BrainSpark Media), and we’re excited to get it up and running.

One of the best features of the site is the listener forums. (You can access them from the tab at the top of the site.) There, you can talk about the music, tell us what you like and don’t like, ask technical questions, and more. Just register for a free account, and get involved. (We’re still working on customizing the look of the forums, so they’ll be evolving a bit over time, but don’t let that stop you from getting involved!)

As our web site says, too, we’ll be launching a new aacPlus format stream soon. aacPlus is an encoding method that will allow us to deliver the same sound quality, with only 35% of the bandwidth. Our current stream runs at 128 kbps, meaning that broadband is a must. While you can listen with an iPhone or BlackBerry (as we explain on our site under the Listen tab), it’s a bit dicey at 128 kbps. The aacPlus stream will operate at just 48 kbps, but still delivering great audio quality, and it’s perfect for our iPhone and BlackBerry listeners. (PC users can use it too; many audio players, including Winamp, are aacPlus compatible.) Stay tuned for details.

CAPP supports public radio; Rikah live!

One of the few terrestrial (e.g., AM/FM) dance music radio stations on-air in the United States is KNHC, 89.5 FM in Seattle, known as “C-89.5.” As a dance music radio station, CAPP supports the station and its mission, and as a listener-supported (“public”) radio station, we quite literally support the station in a number of different ways, including direct financial contributions.

Today, Halloween, our own Rikah is participating in C-89.5’s live pledge drive, thanking contributors on the air, and chatting with the station jocks. The entire CAPP team is thrilled to be a part of KNHC’s fall pledge drive, and we encourage you to learn more and pledge as well via their web site at http://c895worldwide.com.

For those unfamiliar, C-89.5 has been active in Seattle for over 35 years. The station is owned by the Seattle Public Schools and is operated by students of Nathan Hale High School as part of a radio broadcasting course. Production, programming, music selection, copy, and on-air hosting is done by the student staff. Some regular programs are hosted by alumni and other volunteers.

While the station can be heard throughout the Seattle area, anyone can listen online. Just visit the web site (link above), and tune-in with your favorite music player.

We hope you’ll take some time out to listen to and support this great radio resource!

Introducing iDanceRadio.fm and iDanceTechno.fm

Last week, we blogged about Internet radio, and what we here at CAPP are doing to support it, including our advertising on iPartyRadio.com and Fusion Radio Chicago.

A few months ago, CAPP Records embarked on its own online radio initiative with the start-up of two new Internet radio stations: iDanceRadio.fm, and iDanceTechno.fm. We didn’t do this to compete with or undermine what other online stations, including those we support with advertising dollars, are doing. Instead, we wanted to bring a slightly different twist, and offer yet another choice as listeners “channel surf” online.

iDanceRadio.fm is our more mainstream, more adult focused station. Our differentiator is variety; you’ll hear filter house, progressive, electro, techno, some trance, mainstream pop remixes, and more. We’ll feature current charting songs, and reach back into older tracks too. Of course we’ll be playing the entire CAPP Records catalog, but we’re by no means limiting ourselves to that. If it’s quality dance music, we don’t really care which record label issued it, so you’ll hear tracks from Robbins, Ultra, Tommy Boy, Warner, Sony and practically every independent and one-off dance label you can think of.

iDanceTechno.fm is just what the name suggests: the best in techno. Techno, in particular, is just not given its due in the United States, and we’re looking to change that. Based on what we know from our own music sales, there’s an audience in the U.S., largely a youthful one, that’s hungry for techno in all its forms, and we want to deliver it. As with iDanceRadio.fm, sure, we’ll play the CAPP Records techno catalog, but you’ll also hear quality techno from virtually every record label that puts it out. And as the record label responsible for bringing jumpstyle techno to the U.S., you can count on hearing this cutting-edge style on iDanceTechno.fm.

Both of our radio stations are still in the process of being developed, fine-tuned and expanded. Also, for the time being, you’ll notice that they link back to the CAPP Records home page, and there are banners there to click to tune-in. Later this year, each will get a web site of its own.

Check them out, and keep checking as we polish the edges in the months ahead. And please let us know how we’re doing; contact information is on the Contact page of the CAPP Records web site.

Online radio and why it’s important

It doesn’t seem to matter what kind of music you like, there’s a prevailing attitude in the U.S. that “radio sucks.” Times were, we didn’t really have much of a choice but to listen to terrestrial (AM and FM) radio stations. It was either that, or pop-in a cassette (or 8-track!) tape, or later on a CD, and listen to that.

Like a lot of people, I sort of grew-up on radio. But radio, and what’s happened in the past 10 to 15 years in the radio industry (and indeed, the entire music industry) reminds me of the old Bell System, and what’s happened since the forced divestiture of the original AT&T back in the 80s. (If you’re not old enough to remember that, the comparison will be lost on you, but stick with me here.) The only difference is that the fundamental shake-up is fresh, and “the new reality” of radio and music is just now forming.

Back in the day, radio was king. Major record labels were in control. Billboard’s music charts mattered. We listened to what we were spoon fed. Innovative (and back then, local DJs) “discovered” new artists, new songs, and gave us a sneak peek of them sometimes, which is how many careers and new stars were made, and record label deals secured. It was a mostly closed ecosystem, and bands and musicians who wanted to make it big sought the coveted “record label deal” to make it happen.

As we all know, it just doesn’t work that way anymore. The thing is, radio hasn’t really figured that out just yet, and neither have the major record labels. When your very existence is sort of turned on edge, you sorta tend to cling to what’s familiar and safe, so that’s precisely what major radio property owners (like Clear Channel) and major record labels (like Warner, Sony, etc.) are doing too.

But all this has been the subject of thousands of blog entries and magazine articles, and I didn’t really intend this post to go that direction, so let me jump ahead here and talk a bit about why we think online radio is so important to us here at CAPP, as well as to the dance music industry.

First, this is the iPod era. The very simple function we call “shuffle” on our iPods has literally changed the expectations of music consumers. Whether you have a 4 Gig iPod Nano, or an 80 Gig Classic iPod, music lovers users want variety, and they get it with shuffle. Sure, you can make playlists, control things by genre, etc., but shuffle play, coupled with the sheer track capacity of digital music players, has changed how we listen to our music.

But despite the prevalence of digital music players, music consumers still want and need to find out about what’s new, what’s emerging, and who’s released what. That’s really the classic role of radio, but the problem comes when you favor a non-mainstream genre of music like dance. Most radio markets in the United States don’t have dance music radio, and in many radio markets, the same could be said of jazz, classical, and other genres too. Then what?

Well, some of us turned to satellite radio, only to find that just as disappointing. SIRIUS Satellite Radio started with a whopping eight channels devoted to electronic music. Today, there are five (purists would count it as three), and only two of them (The Beat and Area 38) primarily play contemporary dance music. Arguably, The Beat, SIRIUS’ mainstream dance channel, suffers from some of the same programming issues as AM and FM radio, in that the playlists are dominated by Billboard chart tracks and an over-emphasis on major label releases.

That’s where online radio comes in. Online radio stations have been around for years, starting as largely basement operations. Most of them still are, and as such, quality varies wildly. But when you have a few thousand channels to pick from, what does it matter? Some of the best of the bunch float to the top, achieve strong listenership, and end-up doing what AM and FM radio used to do: Helping music consumers find out what’s new and what’s good.

In the United States, online radio is under assault, and I won’t go into the details of all those arguments. Just do a Google search for “save Internet radio” and you can spend hours reading all about it. While the licensing cost issues are real, the reality is that there are a number of great Internet dance radio stations on the air today, and regardless of the eventual licensing fallout, there still will be. And they’re not coming from the AOL’s and Yahoo’s of the world, either.

In an effort to support online radio, CAPP Records has been advertising regularly with some of the leading online stations, including iPartyRadio, and Fusion Radio Chicago. These two stations, among many others, are doing a phenomenal job of what terrestrial and satellite radio are largely failing to do: passionately supporting the dance music industry, and connecting music with an audience hungry for “their tunes.”

Internet radio may have been around for years, but in our view, its ascent and its importance is just beginning. With the ability to listen to Internet radio on-the-go with the venerable iPhone, or even with add-on software (like BerryTunes) for the BlackBerry, it’s no longer tied to your desktop or laptop PC.

But regardless of how or where you listen, support online radio, and take back control over how you’re keep up-to-date on music and music trends.

Get ready to bask in the sunshine…

In 2006, CAPP Records released a very solid compilation called Party Essential. The promotional side of the business wasn’t quite the well-honed machine we have today, and we believe that some of the tracks we put on the release didn’t quite get the exposure they deserved. So we’re working on rectifying that this year alongside our other initiatives.

One track in particular was Summertime, from DJ Skillmaster out of the UK. This pop-friendly dance crossover just has so many of the right elements, we decided to dust it off and hand it to our Germany-based producer, Dany Wild, to give it a redux with his capable touch. We’re very excited to see what Dany comes-up with on this one, but if his prior work is any indication, it’s going to be something very special indeed.

Dany is also a capable videographer, and as we speak, he and DJ Skillmaster are en route to Spain to film the major elements of a new video for Summertime. Skillmaster has been in Rome performing, and Dany calls Hamburg home. A particular location in Spain had just the right combination elements, so off they go to make it happen. We’ll also be including some terrific footage of some of the best sights of summer (so to speak). ;-)

Anyway, stay tuned. We’ll have more details of the new mix and new video as they become available, but we’re targeting a release just in time for the start of summer in the northern hemisphere.

Press Release: CAPP Records Shakes-up the US Dance Music Scene
April 10, 2008, 3:19 pm
Filed under: CAPP Records, New Releases

Yesterday, we sent out the following release to the media and key industry contacts:

San Francisco-based CAPP Records, along with its partner label, Germany’s Mental Madness Records, is shaking-up the US dance music scene again in 2008 with several compilation and single releases slated, featuring its premier compilation, Bounce!

Bounce!, available at iTunes and CAPP’s own Second Life digital store, features numerous strong tracks that push the envelope of dance music. The album’s first single, Andrew Spencer & The Vamprockerz’ global club smash Zombie, continues to climb dance charts with its rock-edged groove of the song made famous by The Cranberries. CAPP’s own Rikah shines with the original Everything is Changing, while DJ Analyzer vs. D-JMC offer a strong redux of Pat Benetar’s famous We Belong.

What makes CAPP’s releases so compelling is the availability of numerous remixes that span global dance styles. From hard-edged, Euro-infused “hands-up” style mixes popular with today’s youth, to more US mainstream friendly house mixes, the songs open dance to new audiences and satisfies dance music fans of all ages.

CAPP’s most recent compilation release, 50 Techno Electro Tunes (available on iTunes, and currently the top #5 iTunes dance album in the US), even embraces the latest craze among Dutch & German kids. Called “jumpstyle,” this new dance sub-genre is edgy, thumpy, and evokes a funky, updated dancing combination of kicking forwards and backwards both legs on the basslines, even certain sub-genres of Jumpstyle moves have been embraced (hardjump, freestyle, duojump and tekstyle/starstyle).

Also on-tap this year with CAPP Records is another single release from Rikah, the rich and tasty Out of Time, as well as a re-release for 2008 of European super-DJ Rob Mayth’s Barbie Girl, a cover of the song originally from Aqua.

Stay tuned for more surprises coming this year from CAPP Records. For more information, visit www.capprecords.com.

CAPP Records hits the airwaves

This week has been pretty big for us here at CAPP… Our radio spots to promote our compilation Bounce! have starting airing on Energy 92.7 here in our home city of San Francisco, as well as on the Internet radio station iPartyRadio.com.

Energy 92.7 is one of the most listened-to terrestrial dance stations in the country, and iPartyRadio.com is one of the leading Internet-only dance stations. Bounce! has really been gaining traction as we promote it to DJs and radio across the country, and we wanted to kick it even farther into high gear to make the public aware of this one.

If you haven’t heard it, Bounce! is home to the worldwide club hit Zombie from Andrew Spencer & The Vamprockerz. But it’s packed with other great hits too, include You from Special D. in a brand-new Rob Mayth remix, and our own Rikah with Everything is Changing which is one of the tracks we’re specifically promoting.

As usual, you can check out Bounce! and all our releases on our web site at www.capprecords.com, where you can preview all the tracks, and link direct to iTunes to download.
